写真家 有田泰而、幻の傑作。
1970年代初頭、芸術に人生を捧げた希代の写真家が残した、
愛と自由に充ちた「贈り物」。
1960年代後半～1970年代半ばにかけて、写真家 有田泰而によって撮られた傑作「First Born 」は、「カメラ毎日」編集者 山岸章二に見出され連載として発表されるも、その後有田泰而がアメリカで没する2011年まで再び世に出ることはなかった。本書は、有田泰而の構想した写真ノートをもとに、弟子であった上田義彦が編集、再プリントして刊行の運びとなった。
「First Born」は、第一子の誕生を契機に、妻ジェシカと息子コーエンを撮り続けたシリーズである。作品として被写体に向き合うと同時に、有田は徹底して親子三人による「遊び」としてもとらえており、カメラの前のさまざまなパフォーマンスが生み出す表現からは独特なユーモアとエロティシズムが感じられる。「カメラ毎日」の中で紹介された「有田夫人ジェスさん」の言葉は以下のようなものである。
「このシリーズはわたしたちふたりにとってたいへん貴重な経験です。お互いのコミュニケーションがよくいっているときには、ほんとにいい写真ができる。しかし問題はどんな写真ができたか、というだけにとどまりません。これはそのままわたしたちの人生（生活）に対する問いかけのようなものでもあります」（「カメラ毎日」1974年5月号）
親子の間にあるコミュニケーションと関係性は、徹底した演出の世界の中にも、自由奔放な風通しのよさと力強い存在感を感じさせる。モノクロームの官能的な美しさとともに、「First Born」は今もその卓越した瑞々しい感性を私たちに届けてくれる。本シリーズから68点の写真が、東京都写真美術館にパーマネントコレクションとして収蔵された。
「First Born」は二人で新たな「写真を産む」という、創造的な行為の蓄積でもあったといえるだろう。だからこそ、それは「そのままわたしたちの人生（生活）に対する問いかけ」にもなりうる。子供を産み、彼らを育てるのと同じように、写真を産み続け、それらを二人で育てあげていくーーそんな「人生（生活）」を営んでいこうという決意表明が、「First Born」ではのびやかに謳いあげられているのだ。 ーーーーーー 飯沢耕太郎「写真を"産む"----有田泰而の『First Born』を巡って」より
30数年ぶりに、師、有田泰而の残した写真と、暗室の中で２ヶ月近く格闘しました。そのプリントたちとの奇跡の再会は、私に人生の不思議と奥深さを感じさせ、そして同時に、壮年期の有田泰而の姿や言葉を鮮明に思い起こさせてくれました。 ーーーーーー 上田義彦
Arita studied under legendary photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto, and was a good friend of many famous photographers and artists, such as Hajime Sawatari. In 1975 Arita published "First Born", a series of images of his first wife and son taken over a period of three years, in the magazine "Camera Mainichi". The series was inspired by the birth of his first child, with the artist using performance techniques with demanding movements and expressions from his models. At times the poses seemed removed from reality. While creating works of art using his wife and child as subjects, the artist also photographed his family at play. In the more formal work, the performance evokes a characteristic humor and eroticism by use of the interplay between mother and child in their innocently free poses. In this body of work the photographer gives the viewer a powerful sense of presence in the surreal world within the picture. The result of the entire series can best be described as a three person documentary, with Arita playing the role of unseen director and documentarian. Arita passed away in 2011. This book is made with a big cooperation of Yoshihiko Ueda, who used to be an Arita's assistant.

有田泰而｜Arita Taiji1941年 福岡県生まれ。写真家、画家。
1969～1975年『カメラ毎日』にて「First Born」を発表。
1980年頃から広告や出版などの撮影のかたわら油彩画を始める。
1988年に画集『裸者の森』(リブロポート)を発表。北米での数回の転居の末、2000年に北カリフォルニアのレッドウッドの森に移住し、妻とともにテント生活をしながら絵画や彫刻を制作。
2011年7月17日、カリフォルニア州フォートブラッグにて帰天。70歳。
