Gathering Matters and Mediations
Iikawa Takehiro
“What matters most is the moment you discover something.” I wrote these words in a statement about the Decorator Crab series, which has been ongoing since 2007. The “decorator crabs” that inspired the series are not special; they can be found in seas around the world. One of their traits is that to protect themselves from predators, they camouflage themselves in their surroundings. What I thought was interesting was that, even though you can find these crabs in any ocean, because they use whatever’s around them to cover their bodies, no two ever look the same—in that sense, every single one is completely unique. Even if someone were to see or find one of these crabs, it would take them a few seconds to figure out what they were looking at. I wondered if I could bring that kind of relationship into my exhibitions and works, to set things up in a way that chance and coincidence were possible.
I really want to treasure these moments of discovery, the moments when something finally clicks, like seeing a decorator crab in the sea. It’s the kind of thing that sounds obvious, like it doesn’t even need to be said, but I believe it from the bottom of my heart. […]
Decorator Crab—Expecting Spectator, an installation presented in this show at Art Tower Mito that spans the first and fifth exhibition galleries and connects the building’s exterior walls to the iconic Tower. At Art Tower Mito, I’ve installed several ropes that dangle from the ceiling and holes in the walls, and many handles. When visitors pull on those ropes or turn the handles, they become connected to other spaces, even outdoors. It’s impossible to see the whole work from inside the exhibition gallery, and that feeling of not knowing or understanding is itself the work. […]
I’m grateful to the museum for fully supporting me in creating the Making Rumors series exactly as I had envisioned it. I think we’ve managed to create something here that you might think you’ve seen before, something familiar, something everyone knows, but that is really a view unique to Art Tower Mito.

“What Matters Most is the Moment You Discover Something” by Iikawa Takehiro
“Iikawa’s works masterfully design such moments of delayed understanding—“Ah, so that’s what that was.” In this regard as well, the diffi culty of recording plays an important role. Photographs and videos make it possible for scenes to be replayed at any time, but they also risk turning these events into something that no longer needs to be thought through. By contrast, events experienced in an unclear context or with ambiguous causal relationships resurface unexpectedly days later, accompanied by the question, “What exactly was that?”
Perhaps Iikawa’s works are intentionally built to fail at compression, leaving the viewer with lingering experiences that remain incomplete and thus continue. While the outward form of an artwork can be documented, the work carries on as experience, unfolding within the viewer’s neural circuits.”
──Tomohiro Ishizu
Excerpt from the text “laying With What Slips Through the Record:
The Neuroaesthetics of Takehiro likawa’s Decorator Crab”
“The unknown identity and its revelation. The deliberate effort, or the commitment that Iikawa’s work demands from the viewer draws them into a struggle over the very nature of expression. When pushing against the massive wall, a striking moment occurs. The ceiling lights, previously hidden behind the box, become exposed once a certain threshold is crossed. Light floods the space, illuminating the individual doing the pushing. There, I recalled another Caravaggio— The Calling of Saint Matthew. Christ suddenly appears in the room, calling out to Matthew, a common laborer, and invites him to become a disciple. Without fully understanding what is happening, Matthew finds himself pointing to himself, as if beginning to grasp his own identity. The light falls from the right, illuminating the room, a tax collector’s office.”
──Eusuke Oiwa
Excerpt from the text “Hell Is a Wall Away”
“On my way to the gallery, I overhear visitors saying, “I’m not sure I saw everything…” as they exit the building. Could their conversation, which carries an air of excitement, be referencing Expecting Spectators, a work that spans multiple locations that cannot be seen simultaneously? Or perhaps Make Space, Use Space, which extends outside the gallery? Or Making Rumors, a work that can only be experienced in a specific time and place? I also witnessed a group of people who happened to arrive in front of Arrangement, Adjustment,Movement at the same time. They slowly approached the wall, glancing back and forth at each other, and cried out with surprise when they succeeded in moving it. In moments like these, I am moved by the quiet beauty of Iikawa’s works,“
