海と空の位置の境も、物的な境もなく、それ自体の形さえなく、
そうして、もはや一つ二つと数えることもできない光景。
目の前にあるものの、その根源へ
前作『雪の刻』において豪雪地で6年にわたり雪を撮り続けた中井菜央は、やがて、その雪をもたらす水へ、海へと向かった。対馬海流を辿って北上し、辿り着いた宗谷岬。境なく広がる水を前に、幼い頃から身近にありながら「黒い穴」のように感じていた琵琶湖の記憶が蘇る。目前の海と記憶の底の湖が響きあい、中井はこの地で撮ることを決めた。
季節を越えてその場所に身を置く。強風に荒れ狂う水、漁船の上から見る闇。何を撮るかをあらかじめ定めることなく、中井は、自らの深奥にある水脈が揺れるものを探すように、世界を見つめ続けた。
やがて、風がひたと止み、皺ひとつない薄布のように水面が静まり返る「トロ凪」に出会う。
荒れ狂う海も、静まり返った海も、水であることに変わりはなく、水は外からもたらされる力を受け入れ、そのつど異なる姿となって現れる。知識として「知る」ことと、身体を通して「識る」こと。その大きな隔たりに触れたとき、それまで確かなものと思われていた世界の輪郭が、ゆっくりとほどけ始めた。
水、海藻、草、石、砂、雲、風、氷、雪。
ひとつひとつに与えられた名前や形、ものとものとを隔てていた境界が揺らぎ、それらは崩れては組み替えられ、また別の世界を立ち上げていく。一滴の雨は水面を転がり、やがて海へと溶けていく。ひとつの滴と、星ほどの大きさをもつ水。個と全体の境も、目の前で揺らいでいく。
空を映す水面は、空の高さをそのまま深さへと変える。どこまでが空で、どこからが海なのか。世界を成り立たせている境界はほどけ、それまで別々のものとして見えていたものが、絶えず姿を変え、互いのうちへと移りゆく。中井は、そのただなかでシャッターを切り続けた。
海と空の境も、ものとものとの境も、その形さえ失われていく光景。一つと無数、極小と極大のあいだを融通無碍に行き来し、再び一つに始まる、果てのない流転。
そのなかに中井は、「決して知られない世界そのものへ繋がる緒」の糸口を見た。

Threads of the Sea

In the bitterly cold lands of the north, heavy gray clouds hung low day after day. Strong winds blew constantly day and night and the rough sea, as if pregnant with anger, continued to rage. In stormy weather, turbulent waves relentlessly clawed at the shoreline,sweeping away all the debris that had washed ashore—the detritus of human life, fishing gear, the carcasses of fish and marine mammals, seaweed, shells… all of it.
Then a day came when the sea transformed completely.
The wind abruptly fell still and silence filled the coast. Before me, the sea stretched endlessly—a silken expanse without a single wrinkle reflected the uniformly pale gray sky. Its surface was like liquid mercury.
The absolute passivity of water remains unchanged, even when it assumes the vast scale of the sea. The sea—water as it is….
At times, this silent sea reflecting the blue sky seemed like a gateway, as if one could simply walk across its surface and enter another world.
I looked out on the sea in its many forms between those two extremes.
Water, seaweed, grass, stone, sand, clouds, wind, ice, snow…the way they were put together—the construction of the world—would come apart and be reassembled, yet always point to the sea. The stability of phenomena is remarkably fluid; even so, the overall harmony was unbroken. Everything ultimately resolved into the totality of the sea.
Standing where only sea and sky remained, I came to realize that the sea, the sky, and the space between hold everything that exists. The sky—the most expansive of these—reaches beyond the horizon and, reaching a little farther, would seem to become almost pure space with a substance so tenuous and a density so slight that even if you were to reach out, you could never feel that you have touched it. The sea, by contrast, has a tangible presence—you can touch it. And yet, it is just as vast as the sky.
Everything exists within the sea, the sky, and the space between them—moving freely, unbound, between oneness and countless forms, between the infinitesimal and the immense, then beginning once more as a single, definite form……in continuous transformation.
With no boundary between the sea and the sky, no physical boundary, no shape of their own, and no longer even a scene that could be counted as one thing or two, I glimpsed the starting end of one of the threads connecting to the world itself—one that no one can ever know.

Artist Information
中井 菜央
1978年滋賀県生まれ。日本写真芸術専門学校卒業。モチーフだけを決め、あらかじめテーマを設定することなく制作を始め、撮影の中でテーマを見出してゆくスタイル。外界に在るもののさきに、自分の内界に潜むものを発見し、それをテーマに据えて、「私とは、世界とはなにか」を問い続けている。
写真集に、「繡」（赤々舎、2018）、「雪の刻」（赤々舎、2022）がある。みすず書房より文章と写真を合わせた書籍「ゆれる水脈」を上梓。
